What’s The Best Handgun For Personal Defense: 9mm or .45?

What's The Best Handgun For Personal Defense

You’re walking out to your car after having dinner with some friends.

Finding a parking spot downtown on a Friday night was about as likely as finding a vegetarian Pit Bull, but you managed to find a spot one street over behind some businesses.

On your way back, you decide to take a shortcut down a small, well-lit alley.

You’re halfway to the parking lot when suddenly a man comes out from behind a dumpster – armed with a knife – and looks like he’s not waiting to see if you’ll cooperate.

You reach for your concealed handgun. Now…

Which Gun Would YOU Rather Carry: A 9mm or a .45?

What's The Best Handgun For Personal Defense

Ok, I know I must be a glutton for punishment for even THINKING about bringing up this topic, right?

But what you carry (or own for home defense) matters a great deal… and not all handguns – or calibers – are the same.

Now I get asked all the time, “What’s the best handgun for self defense?”

Personally, for me, I carry a 9mm for my concealed defensive handgun.

While you may disagree with me (for now), here’s why I’ve made this choice…

You see, accuracy counts for a lot on the range – which is why you’re always psyched so see that tight cluster of holes in the middle of the target.

But you know where accuracy ISN’T as reliable?

A real gunfight.

In a real gunfight, your adrenaline is pumping… your hands are shaking… your fine motor skills are shot… everything in your body wants to run… and not a single cell in you wants to hold still and calmly put all your shots in center mass.

Even the best-trained, most experienced LA police officers only hit their target 28% of the time at close range.

I think it’s probably safe to say your accuracy is going to be less than that of a cop who’s constantly dealing with armed gangs.

The cop makes 1 out of every 4 of his shots.

You? At the very best, you might make 1 out of 5.

(I know it’s hard to believe, but it plays out in real post-gunfight analysis, trust me.)

Ok, Now Let’s Do Some “Combat Math”…

Most .45’s are only packing 10+1 rounds because of the size of the bullet.

Since you’re lucky to get 1 out of 5 rounds on target when your heart is up in your throat, that means you probably just got lucky and landed 2 rounds in your attacker.

But if you’re carrying a Glock 19 (9mm), you’re packing 15+1 rounds.

That’s 46% more rounds than a .45 carries… and you’re likely to get at least 3 of your rounds into your attacker.

That’s a 33% better chance at stopping a violent attacker with a 9mm vs. a .45.

Ok, I don’t have to be a psychic to know what many of you are thinking now…

“But a .45 is a bigger bullet and has more stopping power, right?!”

Well, not exactly…

We ran a simple test in our “Advanced Stopping Power Secrets” guide that shows the difference between what a 9mm does to a replica of a human body and what a .45 does.

The results shocked even us!

The book is free and you can see the photos (and even do your own test) here…

We talk about the effects of other calibers as well and every gun owner should pay close attention to the results and evaluate your handgun choice very carefully.

Oh, One More Thing…

Now that every swingin’ Richard who’s ever proudly owned a .45 has his tighty-whities in a wad, let me say this…

It’s NOT that a .45 is a totally ineffective weapon for personal defense… and I’m not saying that the Glock 9mm is “the best handgun for personal defense” for everyone.

Ultimately, the best handgun for personal defense is the one that you can get to… quickly… get into action… and get bullets into your attacker to stop the threat before he reaches you with a knife or other weapon.

Can you do that with a .45? Yessiree Bob! .308? Yup! .22? Ummm… Yeah!

But with the ballistic “negatives” of certain rounds, it requires you to lean more heavily on “tactics” and accuracy.

There are other factors that make the difference also (like barrel length, etc.) but ultimately… SKILLS trump weapon every time.

We discuss these factors as well in the stopping power guide and it WILL help level the playing field.
